English Dhamma talk and discussion with Bhante Phillip Ṭhānavuḍḍho

We are pleased to announce that Bhante Phillip Ṭhānavuḍḍho has accepted our invitation for a Dhamma talk at the Sarana International Buddhist Center (SIBC) in Tukwila, Washington.

During the Vassana period from July to October, Buddhist monks around the world reduce travel and reside in their local temples to focus on spiritual development. This practice, dating back 2500 years, started in India during the time of Buddha. Bhante Phillip Ṭhānavuḍḍho is observing the Vassana period in the Wat Atammayatarama in Woodinville, Washington.

Bhante is a pali prefix we use to address a Buddhist Monk similar to the way we address strangers with respect as Sir or Madam. You may address him as Bhante or Bhante Phra Phiilip.

He was raised in Washington, D.C. and became a Buddhist at age 13, attending meditation classes at the Washington Buddhist Vihara. He ordained in Sri Lanka in 2013, after one year of intense training as an anagārika and another year as a samanēra, at the Na-Uyana Aranya forest temple, under the late Ven. Ariyadhamma Mahathera. In 2015, Phra Phillip relocated to Rayong, Thailand and re-ordained at Wat Lahanrai (วัดละหารไร่), living at a nearby forest temple. He studied for one year in Myanmar in 2017.

Before becoming a Buddhist monk, Bhante Phra Phillip worked as a lawyer in Washington, D.C. and did legal translation for four years in Sichuan Province, China. He is fluent in English, Spanish, Latin, and can speak basic Thai and Standard Mandarin Chinese (to HSK-2 level). He holds a dual Doctorate (JD/Ph.D) in Law and Philosophy from Indiana University and Georgetown University.
